Goli's Diary

First presented in 2004 at the National Gallery of Armenia in Yerevan, Goli's Dowry is a mixed media installation that was also staged as a performance. The focal point of the piece is a mannequin, dressed in an intricately decorated robe. The garment consists of silk screen images derived from photographs documenting a series of significant private and public events from the artist's life. These include family gatherings, the Iran-Iraq war, and street hangings of convicted criminals. Sculptures of cockroaches, a miniature baby, and black crow complete the dowry.

Fayyazi draws on her experience in ceramics and tile work to create visually and intellectually complex pieces. Her devotion to detail is remarkable and forms strong ties with the practice of handicraft, in which the making of a dress is interwoven with the fabric of life. It also places her within the larger discourse of femininity. Fayyazi's imagery is patched together in a manner that recalls traditional women's work and a celebration of the decorative, often minute but time-consuming tasks that have shaped the female experience for centuries.
